View Full Version : Chat box is scarfing CPU cycles
BumpusWI 06-09-2009, 08:13 PM Just wondering if anyone else is having an issue with a really sluggish pc when viewing a stream.
For me, it appears to be related to the chat window. Looking at the process tab on myXP pc, it shows the browser sucking up 50% of sys processes. If I open a window with the stream only with no chat box, the sys process bounces from 0-5...perfectly acceptable.
I have the latest v. of Java (6.0.13) and the java website verified it's operating properly. I AM using IE 8. (Flash is also the latest v..... 10.22, I think?) I even added EoE to my list of trusted sights, just to be sure.
hmmm....I just realized it happens on 2 other pc's that have IE 8 on them...one Win XP and one Win 7. (light bulb slowing burning brighter)
Any other IE 8 users out there?
mikey 06-09-2009, 08:35 PM I've been having the same issues BumpusWI. I've noticed up 65% usage. I'm still using IE7 though.
tinkcrafter 06-09-2009, 09:17 PM my processes are locking up too...I am xp pc with IE7 latest java, etc
I'mNoPrince 06-09-2009, 09:32 PM Yup and I would bet this is why Firefox won't run correctly without moving your mouse around.
it causes IE resets and also Windows shutdowns and I know this is whats doing it but don't know why.
Waternoose 06-09-2009, 09:37 PM Noticed the same thing as well .... ustream has done something the last few weeks / month that has sent their product back instead of forward!
deano426 06-09-2009, 10:12 PM took notice awhile ago thats why i dont go into chat anymore :icon_frown: takes way too much power from my computer
KVanHilton 06-10-2009, 08:07 AM I'm on a mac and it's happening for me as well so it's not a PC specific issue. If I'm watching the stream in the chat room everything lags, I haven't been able to just keep that window open anymore.
tinkcrafter 06-10-2009, 10:28 AM I can have the window open in the background at work and do not have the lag issue. of course, I am operating off a desktop that is hooked into a server that has 5meg download service on a high speed internet connection and windows server system. Interesting the difference...:icon_blah:
MauiMouse 06-10-2009, 10:31 AM I've been using Chrome and so far so good. I can only have the load in the main frame clicked, I can't click play on the small thumbnail or I get problems and get that lovely Not Responding and closes out my browser. I don't have a problem with the chat on Chrome either.
Waternoose 06-10-2009, 11:08 AM I found if I use Opera browser I have no issues ...
Shall I load the temp chat XAT again? Did anyone have issues with it?
BumpusWI 06-10-2009, 11:36 AM Wierd...
Using my lil Lenovo x40 laptop at work, IE hits the CPU at a consistant 80% usage. But, overall performance is MUCH snappier than from my home desktops. The stream is smoother too. (although, I'm running this stream through a vpn conection back to my home so...the work network isn't really part of this.)
Using IE 6 on this device.
Java 1.5.011 (hmm...older version.)
Flash 10.0.22
...interesting...
GoofyJeff 06-10-2009, 05:38 PM I notice that the stream page uses a lot of cpu cycles on my Mac Pro, no matter what browser I use; between 90 and 110% on the EOE page, around 50% on the ustream.tv page (no chat window there.) Fortunately for me, this thing is a heavy duty machine, and things don't slow down, and I never hear the fans come on. I guess 4 processors and 8GB of RAM can handle it. :)
mom2mykids 06-10-2009, 05:40 PM Gosh, I really wish i could understand what language you all are speaking! :icon_winkwink: I've got no clue. But maybe if I hang out here enough I'll get some Tech knowledge. :icon_thinking::icon_nerd: LOL

ohh thats ok M2M!!! :D
Waternoose 06-12-2009, 12:08 PM Ok I have made a few changes to the video page which seem to lower CPU usage ... the previous version must have been loading 10+ versions of the flash plugin instead of one. Try it out and see if it runs smoother for you!
:)

I'm right there with you!! :) I know I have (at work here) a PC, with Windows that is very old and slow. Not a good combo!! But that's about it. When I read "scarfing CPU cycles" it sounds like someone is really hungry and not necessarily having computer issues! LOL
disneyfan506 06-12-2009, 02:19 PM Thanks so much WN the video page is much faster :)
deano426 06-12-2009, 02:20 PM so much better now :icon_thumbsup:
tinkcrafter 06-12-2009, 05:50 PM Thanks Noose...the windows loaded right away and there doesn't seem to be a lag anymore....YAY...You are Great!!!:)
MauiMouse 06-12-2009, 05:56 PM Thanks Noose, it loads a lot faster now. :icon_thumbsup:

WOW Waternoose...It's like I have a brand new pc. Everything EoE is snappy fast!
(I can hear you mumbling under your breath..."**** flash plugin")
Looking at DVCJens stream, IE is now bouncing steadily from 15-24%. Totally acceptable, eh?
When the ads pop in the frame, the % jumps to 38%.
WN, is it money out of your pocket if I block those ads?

Sorry mom. I know what you mean. I'm an IT person in a healthcare organization. When the nurses start talking THEIR slang, I get totally lost and have no clue what THEY're talking about.
I used slang to say "Hey, my pc seems WAY too busy when loading the video page. It's working TOO hard. Sumpin' ain't right."
DisneyResortFan 06-15-2009, 07:48 AM Wow Moose, that's all I can say is wow what a difference. Great job!:icon_winkwink:
TiggerPiglet 06-15-2009, 12:30 PM Thanks Noose. It's great now. I used to have to log into that alternate chat you set up so I could chat. I was unable to chat on the EOE page, but now I can:)

I figured as much but thanks for the low tech description! :)
