I used the Logitech 9000 when I streamed from YC last October - very easy to set up - pretty much plug and play - and IMO provided superb results.

I actually built a "cam tube" ala Mikeⓒ, a bit different but the same basic concept - keep the camera out of the elements. I'll post a how to build it thread real soon ... anyway if you stream which camera do you use?

Logitech 9000 and Logitech Pro for Notebooks here, which are both exactly the same internally, just different form factors. Nothing beats a Logitech with a glass Carl-Zeiss lens.

I would be interested in the plans for that tube cam, I want to install one outside my house that is weather-proof.

A how to build it would be great.....we have the logitech 9000 and liked it. We used a plastic bag taped over it to protect it from the downpour we experienced on 12/11/08 at SSR. I saw pictures of everyone's rigs and hope we can create a better protection unit for the cam. :-)

The highly rates Logitech 9000 was sold out at Best Buy and Circuit City last week so I bought the Logitech QuickCam Communicate MP. I tested it with a shot out of my office window and was pleased. I too am looking for a reliable and easy to build raincoat for it.

I've got a Logitech Sphere AF, which is the same family of high def webcams as the 9000/etc. Being a gadget freak, the whole motorised pan/tilt head appealed to me.

One thing that annoys me (about high-def webcams in general in fact) is that the zoom function is software interpolated from the full frame only - I would much prefer when streaming (for example) 640x480 that the software would use the whole of the CCD resolution and 'zoom' by initially selecting the appropriate area.

I'm using the Logitech Communicate and am relatively happy with it. I was using a Fuji digicam at one point on my last trip and the quality was superb. Unfortunately it suffered a cracked lens when I dropped it :icon_eek:

I'm still looking for higher quality cam's as the current batch aren't up to the quality i would ideally like.

I'm using an Apple iSight (now discontinued by Apple.) Not the highest quality, but for now it does the job. I built a mount and shelter for it out of wood and a piece of PVC fencepost.

We're thinking of streaming from BWV- boardwalk view in May. Right now we have an Aiptek A-HD high def camera. Being totally ignorant about these things, would this camera do an adequate job?

As long as you have a way of hooking it to your PC/Mac and you can stream with it camcorders will do a great job.

I agree do some testing at Home first ,this will tell you if it will work or not and if it's worth to take down.

Has anyone had issues with the Logitech 9000 and Vista? I read some reviews and they mentioned something about the constant need for drivers to be reinstalled?

Well I just ordered it from Best Buy - we had 40.00 in rewards points to use so we got it for 59.99 + tax - can't beat that. :D

I have two Logitech webcams; the Logi 9000 and C910 (HD)
Both are great webcams with one drawback.... digital zoom. In the default settings, the cam is great but digital zoom pretty much stinks. So far, I have not found a webcam with optical zoom. For general streaming, however, I don't think you can go wrong with either one.

If you are interested in a HD webcam, you have to have the software to support HD. That means using something like Ustream Producer with the HD plug in. Producer is $199 ajnd the plugin is an additional $99........ yikes!

My personal favorite choice for webcam......is a camcorder. My two Sonys are great for streaming and have 25x optical zoom on one and 40x optical zoom on the other.
If your computer has firewire capabilities, you can easily use a camcorder that support firewire also. My Sony HDR-DC62 has both firewire and usb streaming. My Sony HDR-DC52 supports firewire only. You can usually find either one of these listed on Ebay and occasionallly for under $100. Not really that much more than a nice webcam. You can find other brands and models that have firewire, but I can only vouch for the Sonys that I own.

I used a Logitech 720p Webcam Pro 9000 to stream from BCV back in March. I thought it did a good job visually. I had issues with the sound when testing at home, so I chose not to stream audio. I haven't investigated that issue yet, so I don't know if it is me, or a glitch in the manufacturing.

This is the page at Amazon for it. It qualifies for free super saver shipping. I bought mine for $5 more at the time, and paid for speedy delivery as I was time limited.

I am thinking about streaming my next trip, and this is all new to me. I have seen a few posts about the 9000.

What about the Logitech C525 (http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Webcam-Portable-Calling-Autofocus/dp/B004WO8HQ4/ref=pd_cp_e_4)? BestBuy has it on sale for $20 off right now, and I would like to start working on the project earlier rather than later, but I am just not sure if this is a "Best Buy".

It looks like it would be very easy to mount as well.

Well, for the non-geek or on a tight budget the Logitech (http://www.logitech.com/en-us/webcam-communications/webcams) or Microsoft (http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/en-us/webcams) cams are both top notch as are a few others.

If your budget will allow something a bit pricier. The way to go is get a USB video capture device (http://www.ebay.com/itm/260773412873?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649) and the security camera of your choice. I say this because the security cameras are built more this this type of Day/Night use and have far better auto adjusting for exposure. We have seen that many webcams need to be "tweaked" from day time to night time. With security cameras you also have the choice of natural light only cameras (http://www.securitycamerasdirect.com/browse/categories/security-cameras/bullet-security-cameras/) ( some have infrared light ) or " Night Vision ' cameras (http://www.securitycamerasdirect.com/browse/categories/security-cameras/infrared-security-cameras/) ( don't let the night vision fool you, they do very good in day light also ). Both types of cameras come in weather proof cases that will MORE than hold up to the FL. rains. On the downside security cameras generally don't have microphones. But weatherproof microphones (http://www.securitycamerasdirect.com/products/high-performance-microphone-1) can be found and run separately and plugged into the mic input on the computer.

Depending on what your willing to spend, security cameras can offer some great features such as VERY low light capabilities or very long distance night vision. A note on Night Vision cameras although you can not see the IR light that comes from the night vision cameras, IT IS THERE ! I mention this because you DO NOT want to put a window in front of these, the reflection of the IR light will blind the camera with a huge glare spot ( much like pointing a camera into a light bulb :icon_rofl:

And that's my two cents LOL
.

Thanks, Mike. That helps a lot. I was actually thinking of putting the security cams in my house and connect them to a server in the cabinet downstairs so that was really helpful information.

Sounds like the C525 will be good enough for starter work.
